The South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) oversees the pesticide certification program required by the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). In partnership with SDSU Extension, DANR provides training programs to ensure applicators meet federal and state regulations.
A commercial applicator license is necessary for those who apply pesticides for hire or as government employees performing pesticide applications as part of their work duties. You are considered a commercial applicator if you:
- Apply pesticides on another's land for business purposes.
- Advertise pesticide application services.
- Use pesticides as part of governmental duties.
- Perform other roles that classify as commercial application.
To obtain certification, individuals must pass proctored exams in the General Category and any applicable specific categories. Dealers are required to be certified only in the General Category. Licenses are valid for two years and must be renewed by March 1.
Recertification can be completed through one of three methods:
- Retesting to renew certification.
- Completing an online training course.
- Attending in-person recertification training meetings.
These programs ensure applicators are well-trained in the safe and effective use of pesticides, adhering to best practices and regulations to protect public health and the environment.
By maintaining certification, commercial pesticide applicators can confidently provide services that meet the highest standards of safety and efficiency, contributing to better agricultural practices statewide.
