South Dakota state fair celebrates farm life

South Dakota state fair celebrates farm life

By Scout Nelson

Farmers Union Day, set for August 31 at the South Dakota State Fair, serves as a focal point for agricultural education in the state. Sponsored by the state's largest agricultural organization, this event aims to educate attendees about farming and ranching realities.

At 11:30 a.m., the Farmers Share Lunch showcases the economic aspects of farming by offering lunch to 1,000 fairgoers for just under fifty cents. This illustrates the disparity between retail food prices and what producers earn—this year, farmers only receive 48 cents from each lunch sold, with proceeds benefiting Make-A-Wish.

The day continues at 1 p.m. with the Public Utilities Commission Candidate Forum. This forum addresses key issues like property rights, providing a platform for fairgoers to interact with and evaluate the candidates: Kristi Fiegen, Gideon Oakes, and Forrest Wilson.

At 2 p.m., the Farm Safety Quiz Bowl Championships will take place, featuring teams from Canton, Milbank, Platte-Geddes, and Wessington Springs. This competition underscores the importance of safety in farming and ranching—highlighted as some of the most hazardous careers—to educate families on preventing accidents.

Farmers Union Day is an opportunity for fairgoers of all ages to gain a deeper understanding of South Dakota's agricultural landscape through direct engagement and educational activities near the Freedom Stage.
