The 100th South Dakota legislative session is set to commence on January 14 and will span 38 legislative days. During this period, the Center for Rural Affairs will closely monitor and track policy developments that are vital to enhancing the quality of life in rural areas and align with the goal of fostering vibrant rural communities.
This session's focus areas include:
- Renewable Energy: As wind and solar projects continue to gain momentum, the Center advocates for policies that not only promote the development of renewable energy but also consider the needs and concerns of local communities. This dual approach ensures that progress in renewable technology benefits everyone involved.
- Agriculture and Conservation: The Center is dedicated to shaping farm policies that help maintain family-owned farms on the land while safeguarding our natural resources—soil and water. Additionally, these policies aim to provide opportunities for the next generation of farmers, ensuring the sector's sustainability and growth.
- Economic and Community Development: Ensuring that rural communities could prosper is crucial. The Center supports policies that equip small businesses and rural families with the necessary tools and services to succeed, thereby enhancing overall community wellbeing.
Throughout the legislative session, the Center will provide biweekly updates to keep stakeholders informed on the progress and impacts of these policies. Anyone interested in staying updated with these legislative developments is encouraged to sign up for the Center’s newsletter.
Engagement from the public is critical in shaping effective legislation. The Center encourages all individuals to participate in the legislative process by communicating with elected officials about the issues that matter most to them. Information on finding local legislators is readily available for those unsure of their representatives.
This proactive approach by the Center for Rural Affairs highlights their commitment to not only monitoring but actively influencing policy to benefit rural communities across South Dakota.
