The United States Department of Agriculture has launched a new initiative aimed at strengthening the cotton sector and supporting farmers facing economic challenges. The Great American Cotton Plan focuses on increasing demand, improving trade, and rebuilding the textile industry in the United States.
“Since 1607, cotton has helped build and sustain rural America. Our farmers grow some of the highest-quality cotton in the world, but over the last several years America’s cotton growers have been crushed by rising costs, unfair foreign competition, and a flood of cheap synthetic products. In 2023, we lost our status as the world's top cotton exporter to Brazil. This change starts today,” said Secretary Rollins.
The USDA reports that cotton farmers are expected to face another difficult year, with significant financial losses projected across millions of planted acres. The decline of cotton processing facilities and the rise of synthetic fibers have added further pressure to the industry.
Despite these challenges, cotton remains an important crop for the economy, supporting jobs and generating large economic returns across multiple sectors.
The plan includes four main actions. It promotes the use of American cotton through awareness campaigns encouraging natural fiber products. It also supports increased production by improving access to funding and encouraging investment in processing facilities. In addition, the plan aims to grow export opportunities through trade partnerships. Lastly, it focuses on protecting farmers by expanding insurance programs and advancing research to manage crop risks such as pests.
The USDA is also highlighting the benefits of cotton as a natural fiber. Cotton is soft, durable, breathable, and biodegradable, making it a better choice compared to synthetic materials made from petroleum-based products.
With this strategy, the USDA aims to restore growth in the cotton industry, improve farmer income, and strengthen the connection between agriculture and manufacturing.
