USDA Unveils Plan to Control Avian Influenza

USDA Unveils Plan to Control Avian Influenza

By Jamie Martin

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has released a comprehensive plan to combat highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

The outbreak, ongoing since 2022, has affected about 166 million birds and significantly impacted egg production and prices. Additionally, 975 dairy herds have been affected since the virus was detected in March 2024.

The USDA's blueprint outlines five key actions to curb the spread of HPAI and stabilize egg prices. The plan includes a $500 million investment to help poultry producers implement high-standard biosecurity measures. Another $400 million will be allocated to provide financial relief to affected farmers.

To further control the outbreak, USDA is exploring vaccine and therapeutic options for laying chickens. Research and trials on vaccine effectiveness will be prioritized to determine long-term solutions. Additionally, USDA is working on policies to remove regulatory burdens on egg producers, ensuring a steady supply chain.

To address the rising cost of eggs, the department is considering temporary import options, which could help stabilize prices in the short term. Recently, egg prices hit a record national average of $8.11 per dozen, causing concerns among consumers and businesses.

USDA continues to monitor the situation through reports like the Chicken and Egg Report and the Avian Influenza Dashboard, providing updates on flock rebuilding and market conditions. These efforts aim to support poultry farmers, protect food security, and manage future outbreaks effectively.
