South Dakota Leads in Organic Potatoes

South Dakota Leads in Organic Potatoes

By Scout Nelson

The SDSU Southeast Research Farm is set to host an enlightening webinar on organic potato production, scheduled for March 5, 2025. This event is designed to disseminate the latest research findings and practical tips on cultivating organic potatoes, focusing on maximizing yield and sustainability in Eastern South Dakota's unique soil conditions.

The webinar will cover a comprehensive range of topics crucial for successful organic potato farming. These include selecting the right potato varieties that thrive under organic conditions, implementing sustainable fertility practices, and managing pests and diseases effectively without relying on synthetic chemicals. Attendees will also learn about the specific requirements for achieving USDA organic certification, ensuring their practices meet national standards.

This session draws on the first year of research conducted during the 2024 growing season by Joslyn Fousert, an agronomy horticulture research assistant at SDSU. The research compared the effectiveness of tilled versus mulched no-till plots in organic potato production. Although preliminary, the findings and yield data presented will provide valuable insights that can be applied immediately by participants.

In addition to technical knowledge, the webinar will address the broader implications of transitioning to organic agriculture. Dr. Angela Jackson, SDSPA’s Transition to Organic Ag Advisor, will share her expertise on what this shift means for farmers and the potential benefits and challenges they may encounter.

The event promises to be an invaluable resource for farmers, agricultural students, and professionals interested in organic farming practices. By attending, participants will not only gain practical knowledge but also contribute to their ongoing education and adaptation in the ever-evolving field of agriculture.

This webinar is particularly suited for those already in the organic farming sector or those considering making the transition. It aims to equip them with the knowledge and tools necessary to succeed in the competitive and rapidly growing field of organic agriculture.
