BHSU 'Business Buzz' Presenters Share Career Stories
South Dakota Ag Connection - 10/14/2019

The Black Hills State University School of Business continues its Business Buzz speaker series this month with Jeremy Hoven, Spearfish Market President for Black Hills Community Bank. Hoven, a BHSU alum, will share his business journey with students Oct. 17 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in Jonas Hall, Room 306. The event is free and open to the public.

The BHSU Enactus business competition team launched the speaker series, Business Buzz, last month to give students additional awareness and connection to community businesspeople.

The first speaker, Julie Olson, co-owner of Turner Lee Consulting and Design based in Colorado and California, shared with students last month about her work with marketing, packaging, and printing. Olson is teaching "Personal Selling" at BHSU this semester.

Dr. Bobbi Looney, assistant professor of management at BHSU, said the School of Business collaborated to schedule an open hour on Thursdays from 12:30-1:30 p.m. where a minimal number of business courses are scheduled allowing students to attend the speaker series. The event helps connect students with local employers who share their business stories and address student questions.

"Business Buzz helps inspire students to think of how they're going to apply their degrees. 'How did I get started in my career' is a key takeaway for our students from hearing business people's stories and career trajectories," said Looney.

The next Business Buzz will be Nov. 21 featuring Keryn Rowland, vice president of human resources at Synchrony based in Rapid City. Rowland will speak at BHSU in Spearfish about the value of diversity in the workplace.
