E15 Expansion Can Support Farmers and Families

E15 Expansion Can Support Farmers and Families

By Jamie Martin

The farm economy remains under pressure as farmers handle high production costs and low crop prices. Many families in rural communities are uncertain about the future, especially as the country has lost more than 160,000 farms since 2017. Leaders continue to call for practical policies that help farms survive and grow. One major solution is expanding E15 fuel access nationwide.

E15 is a blend of gasoline with 15 percent ethanol made from American corn. It is affordable, renewable, and widely supported by farmers. However, outdated federal rules block its sale in many regions during parts of the year. Allowing permanent, year-round E15 would help both farmers and consumers.

Corn growers would see stronger markets. Currently, about 33 percent of the nation’s corn is used for ethanol. A nationwide shift to year-round E15 could increase demand for corn by up to 2.4 billion bushels each year. This expanded market would give farmers more stability and help support rural jobs.

Families would also benefit from lower fuel prices. E15 often costs 10 to 30 cents less per gallon than regular gasoline. Keeping it available all year could reduce fuel expenses by up to 18 percent. These savings can make a real difference for families working with tight budgets.

E15 also supports sustainability and national security. Nearly 3 trillion pounds of corn in the past decade have been used to produce cleaner, renewable fuel. Farmers continue to improve their methods to reduce emissions and protect soil health. A nationwide shift to E15 could lower carbon dioxide emissions by more than 17.62 million tons each year, equal to removing almost 4 million cars from the road.

Making E15 available year-round is a simple step that brings meaningful benefits. It strengthens farm markets, increases energy independence, lowers fuel costs, and supports environmentally responsible practices. Farmers are ready to deliver more American-grown fuel that helps families and communities thrive.
