Farmers Union Camp Builds Youth Confidence and Leadership Skills

Farmers Union Camp Builds Youth Confidence and Leadership Skills

By Scout Nelson

The South Dakota Farmers Union State Leadership Camp brought together teens from rural communities across the state for a week of learning, growth, and friendship from June 8–13 in the Black Hills.

Open to students from across South Dakota, the camp helps young people develop leadership and communication skills through fun activities and real-life experiences. Teens also learn about agriculture and rural communities, building connections with peers who share similar interests.

Riley Mutter, a high school student from Sturgis, attended for the third time in 2025. He said this year’s camp was the best yet, thanks to the many new and familiar friends he met. Riley shared that the camp helped him overcome social anxiety and become more confident when talking to others.

The camp is filled with fun team activities, teen-led cooperatives, and camp traditions. All events are designed to help youth build confidence and grow their leadership skills in a welcoming environment.

Samantha Bowman, South Dakota Farmers Union Education Program Specialist, said the camp gives rural youth the tools they need for personal and professional success. She works closely with the Junior Advisory Council; a group of selected teen leaders who help organize and lead camp activities.

Billy Kezena, a 17-year-old council member, explained that teens must give a campaign speech to join the Junior Advisory Council. After being selected, members spend the year training and preparing to lead the next camp.

Chase Blotsky, said his goal as a counselor is to help others become confident and step out of their comfort zones—just as he did after three years at camp.
