Agriculture is a major industry in South Dakota, and the Farmer’s Union is dedicated to preparing the next generation to uphold the state's agricultural heritage.
Early mornings at the Farmer’s Union Agricultural Industry Camp are peaceful, but the quiet doesn't last long. Nearly 30 children, aged up to 12, begin their day by gathering around the flagpole for songs and a flag-raising ceremony.
Samantha Bowman, the Education Specialist and camp leader, emphasizes the camp’s mission, supported by the Farmer’s Union.
“We’re hoping that it leads them down a path within the agriculture industry especially, but just leadership in general. It’s important for them to realize that even at such a young age that they do have a voice and that their voice has room at the table as we see the generations continue,” said Bowman.
A significant portion of the camp focuses on educational activities related to the agricultural industry.
“There’s a lot of education behind what we do, but we try to do it all hands-on. So, kids are learning, but they’re having fun at the same time. So, when they go home to tell their parents how much fun they had, they’re really telling their parents everything that they learned,” Bowman explained.
Campers engage in learning about co-ops, retail, money management, and animal science. Cadence Konechna, a current counselor who began as a camper, shared the most rewarding aspect of her role.
“Watching kids go from being socially withdrawn to having a large friend group, being in the center of everything, and having a huge smile on their face,” said Konechna.
This program has been ongoing since the 1930s, instilling valuable skills and knowledge in young participants.
