June Cattle Report Shows Higher Feedlot Levels

June Cattle Report Shows Higher Feedlot Levels

By Jamie Martin

The June cattle report highlights key shifts in the livestock market. Feedlot inventory increased to over 11.6 million head, marking a rise compared to last year. This is the second month in a row where cattle numbers have stayed above previous levels.

Feedlots included in this report represent a large share of total cattle on feed. These numbers provide a strong view of current supply conditions. The increase in inventory is not due to higher supply but reflects slower market movements and longer feeding periods.

Cattle placements into feedlots declined in May. The total number dropped compared to last year, following an increase seen in April. Weather conditions earlier in the season played a role in the variation between months. Overall, placements for the year remain slightly lower than the previous year.

Marketing has also decreased, meaning fewer cattle are leaving feedlots. This trend matches lower slaughter levels for both steers and heifers. Beef cow slaughter has dropped sharply, while dairy cow numbers have slightly increased.

The combination of lower marketings and longer time spent in feedlots explains the higher inventory levels. At the same time, heavier cattle weights have not been enough to make up for reduced slaughter activity.

Looking ahead, beef production is expected to decline this year. Other meats like pork and poultry may see higher production. However, strong consumer demand for beef continues even with rising prices, which will keep influencing the market in the coming months.
