The South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension is organizing a Sheep Shearing School from October 25 to 27 at the SDSU Sheep Research and Teaching Unit in Brookings, South Dakota.
This event welcomes anyone interested in learning the art and technique of sheep shearing directly from experienced professional shearers.
The training is designed to teach participants the proper shearing pattern to ensure safety for both the animal and the shearer. Students will receive hands-on instruction in animal handling, shearing technique, and wool quality management.
The school will also cover how to maintain and repair shearing equipment and provide valuable insights on managing a successful shearing business.
Both beginners and experienced shearers are encouraged to attend. The program aims to equip learners with the skills necessary to shear sheep efficiently while maintaining high wool quality standards.
Participants will also gain a deeper understanding of the tools and equipment used in professional shearing.
The registration fee for the program is $250, which includes shearing equipment and snacks. Meals, however, will be the responsibility of each participant. Since the course provides individualized training, class size is limited to 15 students to ensure quality instruction and personal guidance.
The training will be led by SDSU Extension Sheep Field Specialist Jaelyn Whaley, along with expert shearers who bring years of practical experience to the program.
This unique opportunity allows aspiring shearers, livestock producers, and enthusiasts to gain practical skills that support animal welfare, wool production, and the regional sheep industry.
