Livestock predators in focus at SDSU extension seminar

Livestock predators in focus at SDSU extension seminar

By Scout Nelson

The SDSU Extension, in collaboration with the South Dakota Sheep Growers Association, is setting the stage for a groundbreaking discussion on livestock predator management.

Scheduled for March 8, 2024, during the KBJM Farm and Home Show, this seminar promises to shed light on effective strategies against sheep's most formidable foes: coyotes and foxes.

Dubbed the Innovations in Predator Management Roundtable, the event will take place at the Palace Theatre on Main Avenue in Lemmon.

The discussion, led by Jaelyn Whaley of SDSU Extension, aims to equip producers with knowledge and tools to curb predator-related losses, which are significant hurdles in the industry.

Noteworthy speakers include Ryan Powers from the USDA Wildlife Services and Dustin Ranglack from the USDA National Wildlife Research Center, alongside renowned author and producer Cat Urbigkit and Brent Roeder from Montana State University. Their collective expertise will offer invaluable insights into predator management techniques.

Attendance is free, with options for both in-person and online participation. Online attendees are required to register for access to the seminar. Registration details can be found on the SDSU Extension Events page. Locals can tune into KBJM Radio for live coverage.

The seminar is part of the 30th annual farm and home show, which also features Beef Quality Assurance training and updates on combating Ventenata grass, a new invasive species threatening rangelands.

The event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Beeler Community Center, will also host various vendors and an SDSU Extension booth.

For more details and registration, visit the SDSU Extension website or search "predator" on their events page.
