Maryland Tree Grants Support Farm Growth

Maryland Tree Grants Support Farm Growth

By Jamie Martin

The Maryland Department of Agriculture is offering financial incentives for tree planting under the 5 million Trees Program. These efforts support farmers in boosting income, improving soil and herd health, and preserving local streams and ecosystems.

Eligible farmers can receive up to 100% cost-share for approved agroforestry practices and a $1,000 per-acre bonus for creating riparian forest buffers. These initiatives help Maryland reach its goal of planting 5 million trees by 2031, supporting public health and climate resilience.

The program encourages various practices -

  • Riparian Buffers: Trees and shrubs along streams to naturally filter water
  • Hedgerow Plantings: Tree fences that attract wildlife and support biodiversity
  • Windbreaks: Tree rows to reduce odours and shield production areas
  • Silvopasture: Blending livestock grazing with tree planting for herd and soil improvement
  • Tree and Shrub Establishment: Enhancing land with environmental tree cover
  • Alley Cropping: Crops planted between tree rows to enrich soil health

These agroforestry practices not only protect land and water but also help farmers create new sources of income, especially by planting nut and berry trees.

Free technical help and application assistance are available through local soil conservation districts. Interested farmers can visit the program’s website for more information.

“This program supports cleaner water, healthier soil, and a stronger farming economy,” said a department spokesperson.

Maryland’s initiative shows how agriculture and environmental care can work together for a sustainable future.
