South Dakota soybean farmers have until Saturday, May 10, to apply for a unique opportunity to see how their soybeans are used globally. The “See For Yourself” program, hosted by the South Dakota Soybean Checkoff, offers farmers a chance to travel to Mexico from July 7 to July 11, 2025.
The tour helps farmers understand the role of the soybean checkoff program and its efforts to promote U.S. soybeans around the world. According to Jerry Schmitz, executive director of the South Dakota Soybean Checkoff, the trip gives participants a closer look at international customers and trade systems beyond the grain elevator.
Farmers on the tour will visit a soy-handling shuttle station, a feed mill that uses soy in livestock rations, and learn about the work of the U.S. Soybean Export Council. They will also see how shipping and port infrastructure support exports and trade relationships.
This program also helps build personal relationships among farmers and global buyers, which can strengthen South Dakota’s connection to international markets. The trip is designed to highlight how checkoff funds support trade, animal agriculture, and soy-based innovations.
Applications will be reviewed by the South Dakota Soybean Board, which considers each applicant’s background. The program is fully funded, covering all travel, lodging, and meals. However, cancellations after May 19 will result in a $200 fee due to planning and reservation costs.
