S.D. Field Crops Lag Behind Averages



For the week ending Sunday, there were 5.0 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 6% very short, 24% short, 55% adequate, and 15% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 8% very short, 29% short, 53% adequate, and 10% surplus.

Corn planted was 62%, well behind 92% last year, and behind 71% for the five-year average. Emerged was 11%, well behind 50% last year and 33% average.

Soybeans planted was 34%, well behind 81% last year, and behind 47% average. Emerged was 4%, well behind 25% last year, and behind 12% average.

Winter wheat condition rated 4% very poor, 20% poor, 46% fair, 29% good, and 1% excellent. Winter wheat headed was 1%, behind 8% last year and 6% average.

Spring wheat condition rated 1% very poor, 16% poor, 26% fair, 55% good, and 2% excellent. Spring wheat planted was 94%, behind 99% last year, but near 92% average. Emerged was 69%, behind 85% last year, and near 71% average.

Oats condition rated 1% very poor, 17% poor, 55% fair, 26% good, and 1% excellent. Oats planted was 88%, behind 98% last year, and near 91% average. Emerged was 57%, well behind 82% last year, and behind 75% average.

Sorghum planted was 21%, behind 35% last year, and near 23% average.

Sunflowers planted was 6%, behind 16% last year and 11% average.

Pasture and range conditions rated 17% very poor, 28% poor, 41% fair, 13% good, and 1% excellent.
