SDSU Extension Hosts Women Grazing Workshop This July

SDSU Extension Hosts Women Grazing Workshop This July

By Scout Nelson

Women involved in agriculture are encouraged to attend the 2025 South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension Women on the Range Grazing Workshop from July 22 to 24 at Wedge Tent Ranch near Faith, South Dakota.

This hands-on event is specially designed by women and for women. The goal is to provide practical knowledge in grazing management, plant identification, livestock handling, and overall rangeland health. Women from South Dakota and surrounding states are welcome to take part in this experience.

The workshop is held in collaboration with Principled Land Managers, led by Pat Guptill from Quinn and Bart and Shannon Carmichael from Faith. It will offer immersive training in how livestock and natural landscapes work together and how to maintain healthy pastures for better productivity.

Over the course of the event, participants will explore key grazing principles, assess pasture conditions, and strengthen their understanding of how to manage livestock effectively on rangelands. The workshop also focuses on building community, leadership, and confidence among women making ranching decisions.

SDSU Extension will soon release registration details and hotel information at extension.sdstate.edu/events. A complete event schedule will be shared with those who register.

While technical knowledge is a focus, organizers say that the friendships and shared experiences are just as valuable. As one organizer, Ehlert, shares, the connections made during the workshop are meaningful and lasting.

Whether a beginner or experienced land manager, attendees will leave with useful skills and new relationships to support their work.
