SDSU Extension Offers Workshop on Riparian Restoration on Sept. 5 in Newelll Advocacy

SDSU Extension Offers Workshop on Riparian Restoration on Sept. 5 in Newelll Advocacy

SDSU Extension is partnering with The Nature Conservancy to offer a free, one-day workshop on riparian restoration.

Riparian zones are lands along the edges of rivers, streams and lakes. The workshop will cover riparian basics and management, lasting from 9 a.m. to approximately 3 p.m. MT. on Sept. 5, 2023, at the Newell Senior Citizen Center in Newell, South Dakota. Lunch will be provided.

The morning session will provide participants with knowledge of riparian ecology, management and low-cost, low-tech interventions such as beaver dam analogs, which are man-made structures designed to mimic a natural beaver dam. There will also be resources to help attendees determine how at-risk the riparian areas are on their operations. After lunch, there will be a tour of an active riparian restoration project at the Swan Ranch near Newell.

“This is an excellent opportunity for producers to learn how better to manage a critical range resource – their riparian areas. They will learn how to assess the riparian areas on their operation and learn available tools and techniques to restore riparian areas and increase their functionality,” said Krista Ehlert, assistant professor and SDSU Extension Range Specialist.
