South Dakota State University Extension has published its 2025 Pest Management Guides to help producers manage pests effectively in their fields. These resources address common threats like weeds, insects, and diseases, offering clear guidance on appropriate chemical and pesticide options.
“Basically, if you see a pest, it could be weeds, insects or diseases based on what you see in your field,” said Philip Rozeboom, IPM Coordinator, SDSU Extension. “You can use those guides to get a quick, easy idea of what chemicals, what pesticides are available for you to use.”
“You want to use different kinds ... if you keep using the same chemical over and over and over again, you’re putting selection pressure on that pest and what that means is you’re selecting for that pest to develop resistance to that chemical,” said Rozeboom.
Updates to the 2025 guides were minimal, primarily reflecting the removal of delisted chemicals and the addition of new ones. Producers can access these guides online, at farm events, or during applicator training sessions.
Rozeboom encouraged producers to consult their crop advisers or extension professionals if they have questions about field pests. By using the guides and seeking expert advice, farmers can manage pests more effectively and sustainably.
