The South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension and South Dakota Grassland Coalition will host a Small Acreage Tour on July 9, 2025, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. CDT. The event will take place at Pete and Bridget Bauman’s acreage, located at 17755 456 Ave, Watertown, South Dakota.
This informative evening tour is designed for individuals and families interested in learning how to manage small acreages effectively. With a focus on conservation and community cooperation, the event offers a chance to explore land management options that support both environmental and income goals.
The evening will begin with a free meal and social hour hosted by the Happy Dog food trailer at 5:30 p.m. After a welcome session at 6:15 p.m., attendees will hear insights on holistic thinking, economics, and incorporating family and small enterprises into acreage planning.
At 6:30 p.m., a walking tour of the Bauman acreage will showcase several practical land use strategies. Highlights include a 20-year grassland restoration project, shelterbelt and pasture renovation, weed and pest control, prescribed fire, grass-fed livestock, gardens, chickens, and pest issues like pocket gophers.
By 7:30 p.m., participants will embark on a trailer tour of neighboring pastures, learning about establishing grass on old cropland and working cooperatively with neighbors. The evening will conclude at 8:30 p.m. with a Q&A session focused on agency partnerships, mentorship teams, and balancing work and personal life.
This tour provides a unique opportunity to learn from real-life experience and is ideal for those managing or planning to manage small rural properties.
