South Dakota Awards Record Number of Build Dakota Scholarships in 2025

By Scout Nelson

South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden has announced a record 630 Build Dakota Scholarships for the 2025–2026 academic year, marking the largest number of awards in the program’s 11-year history.

Governor Rhoden emphasized that Build Dakota is more than just a scholarship, it is a long-term investment in the state’s future. The program connects students to meaningful career paths while ensuring South Dakota’s economy remains competitive.

Established in 2015 through a $50 million investment from philanthropist T. Denny Sanford and the Daugaard Administration, the program has now awarded more than 4,500 full-ride scholarships. Students gain opportunities to pursue careers in high-demand areas such as healthcare, construction, advanced manufacturing, law enforcement, agriculture, and information technology.

Deni Martin, Program Director, noted the life-changing effect of the scholarships. She explained that the initiative not only transforms individual lives but also impacts the broader workforce. Working with South Dakota’s four technical colleges and numerous business partners, the program has distributed millions of dollars in scholarships.

This year, 92 percent of scholarships are co-sponsored by businesses and organizations, reflecting strong public-private partnerships. Industry partners have committed more than $21 million since the program began, demonstrating long-term support for a skilled workforce.

Graduates of South Dakota’s technical colleges have excellent outcomes, with 98 to 100 percent either employed or continuing their education. Nearly 90 percent of employed graduates stay in South Dakota, further strengthening the state’s workforce. Build Dakota recipients commit to working in the state for at least three years.

About 6 percent of the new awards went to out-of-state students, many from neighbouring Midwest states. These students also commit to staying in South Dakota after graduation, helping grow the state’s population and economy.

With record scholarships awarded and strong partnerships in place, South Dakota is building a brighter future by aligning education with workforce needs.
