South Dakota Protects Outdoors with New Bills

By Scout Nelson

Governor Larry Rhoden signed three new bills aimed at promoting South Dakota’s great outdoors. These measures focus on supporting fishing, strengthening preservation efforts, and improving the State Fairgrounds.

“South Dakota’s outdoor beauty is part of what makes our state so great. I am committed to making sure our kids and grandkids can enjoy our great outdoors to the fullest for generations to come,” said Governor Rhoden. “By promoting fishing, strengthening preservation, and opening up space for new opportunities at our State Fair, we are protecting what makes South Dakota special.”

Two of the bills, HB 1047 and HB 1052, are signed during a ceremony attended by the prime sponsors, Game, Fish and Parks Secretary Kevin Robling, and other stakeholders.

  • HB 1047 provides funding for construction costs at the Blue Dog State Fish Hatchery. The hatchery produces multiple fish species for stocking lakes and rivers across South Dakota, supporting recreational fishing and local ecosystems.
  • HB 1052 transfers Hydro II to the Spearfish Canyon Foundation. This move strengthens preservation efforts and increases public education about South Dakota’s natural resources.

Additionally, Governor Rhoden signed HB 1021, which allows the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources to continue making improvements at the State Fairgrounds, including removing buildings that have outlived their usefulness, creating space for new opportunities and activities.

During the current legislative session, Governor Rhoden has signed 13 bills into law and vetoed one. These actions reflect a strong commitment to protecting natural resources, enhancing recreational opportunities, and supporting sustainable use of South Dakota’s outdoor spaces.

Through these measures, the state ensures that its natural resources, recreational areas, and State Fair facilities remain accessible, preserved, and enjoyable for both current residents and future generations.
