In a groundbreaking collaboration between Pipestone Management, Automated Production Systems, and Ag Property Solutions, South Dakota is set to unveil the country's inaugural all-steel swine barn in Bradley. This pioneering structure promises a game-changing approach to swine production, boasting enhanced safety measures and streamlined construction techniques.
Unlike traditional barns, the all-steel facility utilizes innovative bolted connections instead of nails and welding, resulting in rapid assembly and effortless installation with the aid of cranes. The absence of welds not only expedites construction but also facilitates hassle-free transportation.
Beyond its construction advantages, the steel barn offers long-term benefits for swine producers. With its superior fire resistance, this innovative design ensures heightened safety levels while promoting longevity, projecting a lifespan of 50 to 60 years. The steel barn's interlocking panels contribute to enhanced insulation and sealability, ensuring optimal animal comfort and health.
Despite the initial higher upfront cost, the efficiency and operating savings of the steel barn make it a viable investment. The implementation of fire-resistant materials also presents potential insurance premium reductions, making it a financially sound decision.
The South Dakota facility sets a precedent for future advancements in swine production. As industry experts continue to refine the design and uncover new insights, the all-steel barn's advantages are expected to expand further, revolutionizing the sector.
The all-steel barn, owned by five families and three Hutterite colonies through Pipestone, will accommodate 8,500 pigs starting in July. Its production will supply pigs to Minnesota, South Dakota, and Iowa, marking a pivotal milestone in the quest for safer, more efficient swine production.
