Cattle producers interested in advancing their artificial insemination (AI) capabilities are invited to participate in a refresher course hosted by South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension. Scheduled for June 8, 2024, this course is ideal for those already familiar with AI basics but seeking to update their skills or gain additional practice.
The training will take place at the SDSU Breeding Beef Unit located at 108 30th St. in Brookings, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The cost of registration is $150 per person, which includes lunch. Participants are required to have prior AI training experience. Registration can be completed on the SDSU Extension Events page by searching for "refresher".
Robin Salverson, SDSU Extension Cow/Calf Field Specialist, emphasizes that this course is designed for individuals needing practical experience to refresh their skills. The day will begin with semen handling, followed by AI technique practice. A roundtable discussion over lunch will allow participants to address specific questions and share experiences.
"The more you practice AI, the better you get," says Salverson. This hands-on course will not only reinforce existing knowledge but also introduce the latest industry advancements.
AI is widely used in cattle breeding to enhance herd genetics by providing access to superior bulls. This course provides a unique opportunity for producers to improve their breeding strategies and outcomes.
Salverson also noted that this is the only SDSU Extension AI school scheduled for the year. Those interested in future sessions are encouraged to contact her for notifications on upcoming courses.
