Three South Dakota Ranches Win Master Lamb Awards

Three South Dakota Ranches Win Master Lamb Awards

By Scout Nelson

The South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension has announced the recipients of the 2025 Master Lamb Producer Awards, recognizing three exceptional sheep operations for their dedication, leadership, and innovation in the state’s livestock industry.

The awards were presented by Jaelyn Whaley, SDSU Extension Sheep Field Specialist, during the 88th South Dakota Sheep Growers Association Convention in Watertown.

“For 50 years, remarkable South Dakota sheep producers have been honored through the Master Lamb Producer program,” Whaley said. “This year, three operations were recognized for their excellence in innovation, production metrics and leadership in the South Dakota sheep industry and beyond.”

The three honored operations include Next Year Ranch, Coplan Farm, and Held’s Hampshires.

Next Year Ranch, operated by Matt and Natalie Palmlund near Bancroft, began as a small flock and has grown into a thriving operation of 350 Suffolk, Polypay, and Rambouillet ewes. The Palmlunds market their lambs as fat lambs and sell replacement ewe lambs and rams, reflecting the strong quality of their flock.

Coplan Farm, located in Hazel and managed by Joe and Tonya Coplan, has been feeding lambs since 1980. The operation now feeds up to 13,000 lambs and works with major cooperatives like Superior Farms and the Dakota Lamb Growers Cooperative. Joe also serves on the American Sheep Industry Lamb Council, helping advance the U.S. lamb industry.

Held’s Hampshires, managed by Jeff and Mary Held of Aurora, has focused on top-quality Hampshire genetics since 1988. The Held family is deeply involved in youth livestock programs, the South Dakota State Fair, and leadership within the American Hampshire Association.

Together, these families represent the heart of South Dakota’s sheep industry—hard work, community involvement, and a shared commitment to producing high-quality lamb and promoting agricultural sustainability.
