U.S. pork shines on trade mission to Tokyo

Matti Carlile, a business coordinator at the Oklahoma Pork Board, was part of a unique delegation on a trade mission to Tokyo, organized by the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF). This mission included 21 delegates from sectors like pork, beef, soybeans, and corn, aiming to fortify U.S.-Japan agricultural ties.

During the visit, Carlile engaged in various activities, including meetings with local retailers and insights sessions with U.S. Embassy and USMEF Japan staff.

One notable experience was dining on Tonkatsu, a dish using U.S. pork, highlighting the presence of Oklahoma's Seaboard corporation in the Japanese market.

The visit also provided Carlile a chance to observe consumer behavior in Tokyo, particularly the high demand for freshness in meat products, evident in the frequent shopping habits and the vibrant appearance of pork in stores.

The mission culminated in a seminar that drew over 400 attendees, emphasizing the robust trade relationship between the U.S. and Japan, especially in pork consumption, which is remarkably high in Japan. This trip not only reinforced existing relationships but also opened doors to new opportunities in the meat export sector, marking a successful exchange and a proud moment for U.S. agricultural representatives.
