GFP Proposes Changes to Reetz Lake Fish Harvest
South Dakota Ag Connection - 06/14/2018

In an effort to regain public fishing access to Reetz Lake; Game, Fish and Parks staff have been working on access agreement terms and conditions with the landowners of Reetz Lake; currently a closed nonmeandered lake in Day County. The proposed harvest restrictions meet the conditions set by the landowners of Reetz Lake and if approved, Reetz Lake would be open to public fishing from May 1 to Sept.30. Fishing access from Oct. 1 to April 30 would be open by landowner permission only.

If the following daily limits and harvest restrictions are not approved, Reetz Lake will remain closed year-round to public fishing and will only be open by landowner permission. Daily fish limits for Reetz Lake proposed by the GFP Commission during the meeting in Aberdeen are as follows:

May 1 to Sept. 30

- 1 walleye or sauger, 28 inches or greater

- 1 yellow perch, 14 inches or greater

- 1 black crappie, 15 inches or greater

- 1 bluegill, 10 inches or greater

- Statewide regulations for all other species

Oct. 1 to April 30

- All lake specific harvest restrictions are off and statewide regulations would apply to all species.

In addition, the proposal includes removal of the current year-round regulation for bass, where only those largemouth and smallmouth bass less than 14 inches in length or 18 inches or greater in length may be taken, and of the largemouth and smallmouth bass taken daily no more than one may be 18 inches or greater in length;

The GFP Commission will consider the adoption of this proposal on July 11 in Pierre. To comment in person, the public hearing will be held July 11 Pierre at 10 a.m. CDT at the Ramkota Hotel and Convention Center. Individuals can also provide written comments on proposals by sending them to 523 E. Capitol Ave., Pierre, SD 57501, or online at https://gfp.sd.gov/forms/positions/. To be included in the public record and to be considered by the Commission, comments must include a full name and city of residence and meet the submission deadline of 72 hours before the public hearing (not including the day of the public hearing).
