South Dakota Sorghum Production Forecast Up Double Digits

Based on October 1 conditions, South Dakota's 2021 corn production is forecast at 751 million bushels, up 4% from last year's production, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Area to be harvested for grain, at 5.65 million acres, is up 27% from a year ago. Yield is forecast at 133 bushels per acre, down 29 bushels from last year.

Sorghum for grain is forecast at 16.0 million bushels, up 40% from last year. Area for harvest, at 285,000 acres, is up 78% from 2020. Yield is forecast at 56 bushels per acre, down 15 bushels from last year.

Soybean production is forecast at 218 million bushels, down 4% from last year. Area for harvest, at 5.45 million acres, is up 11% from 2020. Yield is forecast at 40 bushels per acre, down 6.0 bushels from last year.

All sunflower production is forecast at 793 million pounds, down 32% from last year. Acreage for harvest, at 501,000 acres, is down 110,000 acres from 2020. Yield is forecast at 1,582 pounds per acre, down 328 pounds per acre from a year ago. Of the acres for harvest, non-oil sunflowers account for 36,000 acres and oil sunflowers account for 465,000 acres.

Alfalfa hay production, at 2.08 million tons, is down 36% from last year. Area for harvest, at 1.60 million acres, is down 11% from a year ago. Yield of 1.30 tons per acre, is down 0.50 ton from 2020. All other hay production, at 1.27 million tons, is down 40% from last year. Area for harvest, at 1.15 million acres, is down 8% from a year ago. Yield of 1.10 tons per acre, is down 0.60 ton.
