A free field day focused on organic vegetable farming and cover crops will take place on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. CDT in Bruce, South Dakota. The event is hosted by South Dakota State University Extension (SDSU), South Dakota Specialty Producers Association (SDSPA), and Haroldson Farms.
This event is open to current and new farmers, gardeners, and technical service providers interested in learning more about USDA certified organic practices, cover crops, and soil health. Attendees will explore how diverse farming techniques support long-term success.
The day includes a guided walking tour of vegetable fields, high tunnels, and on-farm cover cropping trials. Kyle Haroldson of Haroldson Farms and Kristine Lang from SDSU Extension will lead the tour and explain how they use crop rotation and cover crops to support plant growth and soil health.
Dr. Angela Jackson will also speak about the USDA Transition to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP). Her talk will cover how farmers can access resources and support to move their operations toward organic certification.
Participants are encouraged to ask questions, exchange ideas, and share their experiences throughout the day. After the tour and talks, a free farm-to-table lunch will be served at a nearby restaurant.
The event is scheduled to take place rain or shine. However, if there is an active storm warning, it will be cancelled. Visitors are asked to wear suitable footwear and leave pets at home. Families are welcome, and accommodations are available for those with mobility needs by contacting the event organizers in advance.
