Secure Your Ag Legacy with SDSU Extension
South Dakota Ag Connection - 09/14/2023

SDSU Extension's Sustaining the Legacy program offers assistance for farmers and ranchers to develop long-term plans for their agricultural operations, whether they're experienced or new to the industry. This program ensures financial security for future generations and ensures the continuation of farming and ranching.

The upcoming round of Sustaining the Legacy, a series of farm and ranch estate planning conferences, is scheduled for November 2, 9, and 16, 2023, at the SDSU Extension Pierre Regional Center. Each day's session runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. CDT, with lunch included.

Heather Gessner, SDSU Extension Livestock Business Management Field Specialist, emphasizes that there are both optimal and less-ideal ways to build a family legacy, and these conferences provide a comprehensive understanding of various methods for farmers and ranchers.

Estate planning can be complex, overwhelming, and time-consuming, especially when it comes to finding professionals who specialize in agriculture, such as attorneys, insurance agents, and accountants. Sustaining the Legacy brings these experts together, simplifying the process for participants.

This year's conference topics cover crucial areas, including trusts, Limited Liability Companies (LLCs) and Limited Liability Limited Partnerships (LLLPs), long-term care insurance, wills and probate, retirement funding, and understanding current and potential tax implications.

Early bird tickets are $70 per person until October 16, then $80 per person. Registration remains until event day, but due to limited availability, early registration is strongly recommended.

Future Sustaining the Legacy events are also planned, offering more opportunities for participation:

• December 5, 12, and 19 at SDSU Extension Winner Regional Center (Early registration ends November 23).

• January 9, 16, and 23 at SDSU Extension Mitchell Regional Center (Early registration ends December 22).

• February 6, 13, and 20 at SDSU Extension Aberdeen Regional Center (Early registration ends January 24).

• March 5, 12, and 19 at SDSU Extension Watertown Regional Center (Early registration ends February 21).
