4-H Shotgun Coaches Training in Faulkton SD

By Scout Nelson

SDSU Extension is organizing a 4-H Shooting Sports Coaches Training for the shotgun discipline on Saturday, July 12, 2025, beginning at 8:30 a.m. CDT. The training will be held at the Faulk County Trap Club, located at 16335 SD Hwy 45, Faulkton, South Dakota 57438.

This session is part of the certification process to become a Level 1 shotgun coach for South Dakota 4-H Shooting Sports. Participants must complete several steps before becoming fully certified to work with youth.

These include:

  • Becoming a registered volunteer with South Dakota 4-H
  • Completing a 4-H Volunteer Work Agreement
  • Attending an interview with a county 4-H professional
  • Passing a background check
  • Paying a $10 fee at the county office

Enrolling in 4hOnline as a volunteer every year

The shotgun discipline training at this event is a required step in the certification process. Participants must bring their own eye and ear protection, firearms, and ammunition. Lunch will not be provided, so attendees are encouraged to plan accordingly.

In case of a weather-related cancellation, registered participants will be notified by email and text message.

The training agenda includes registration at 8:30 a.m., followed by discipline training at 9:00 a.m. A lunch break is scheduled at 12:30 p.m., and if needed, youth development training will begin at 1:00 p.m.

Those interested should register by July 12. For more information, contact John Keimig, SDSU Extension Youth Safety Field Specialist.

This training provides an important opportunity for volunteers to gain the skills and knowledge needed to mentor young participants in safe and responsible shooting practices.
