Communities in western South Dakota have an incredible opportunity to shine as applications open for the 2024 Energize! conference. This dynamic event, hosted in a different community each year, brings together nearly 120 community leaders from across the state to brainstorm and rejuvenate rural landscapes.
Organized by South Dakota State University Extension's Community Vitality team, Energize! focuses on re-energizing rural communities with populations fewer than 5,000. From arts and culture to youth engagement, funding community projects to fostering growth, the conference's diverse program features inspiring keynote speeches and engaging sessions.
This year's conference in Wessington Springs witnessed the heartwarming engagement of local businesses and community members. Ryan Jensen, owner of Springs Food Market and Jensen's True Value, cherished the opportunity to network with other small-town business owners and leaders without leaving home. Even his young sons, Brecken and Bosten, enthusiastically set up a lemonade stand during the event.
The impact of Energize! goes beyond inspiration, as it stimulates local economies. The 2023 conference pumped an estimated $20,222 into Wessington Springs, benefiting local food vendors, lodging establishments, and businesses. Attendees even received "chamber bucks" to spend at local establishments, nurturing a sense of community support.
Energize! serves as a powerful platform for city, community, and economic development teams, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange. Lyssa Bruzelius, executive director of Missouri River Tourism, praised the conference for its networking opportunities and energizing effect.
The 2024 Energize! conference, accepting applications until October 1, showcases host communities' uniqueness and spirit, providing fresh perspectives, local resource knowledge, and a drive for positive change. To apply contact Kari O’Neill.
