Farm Bureau seeks fair biofuel tax credits

Farm Bureau seeks fair biofuel tax credits

By Jamie Martin

The American Farm Bureau Federation has expressed concerns over the disparities created by the current sustainable fuel tax credits, which may disadvantage American farmers.

In discussions with the White House, the Federation highlighted the need for policy adjustments to ensure fair treatment for domestic feedstocks used in biofuel production.

The Clean Fuel Production Credit and the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Credit are designed to incentivize biofuel production, crucial for reducing national carbon emissions.

The existing guidelines favor foreign over domestic feedstocks, posing challenges for local farmers who are ready to contribute to clean fuel initiatives but find the terms unattainable under the current framework.

The Federation has urged the administration to prioritize domestic feedstocks to ensure American farmers are at the forefront of the clean fuel transition. This adjustment is vital as farmers make crucial production decisions for the upcoming year, with the 45Z tax credit set to take effect soon.

Additionally, the Farm Bureau suggests that agricultural practices qualifying for these credits should be expanded to include more climate-smart techniques. This would provide greater flexibility and encourage more farmers to participate in these programs.

The current conservation requirements should also be adjusted to offer more practical and accessible options for farmers wanting to engage in sustainable practices.

This push for policy reform aims to create a more balanced playing field and enhance the role of domestic agriculture in achieving the nation's clean energy goals, ensuring that the benefits of such initiatives are felt broadly across the agricultural sector.
