USDA's swift action aids Georgia's hurricane relief

USDA's swift action aids Georgia's hurricane relief

By Jamie Martin

Agriculture Deputy Secretary Xochitl Torres Small recently visited the Golden Harvest Food Bank in Augusta, Georgia, highlighting the USDA's rapid response to Hurricane Helene's aftermath.

During her visit, Torres Small participated in a roundtable discussion about the vital support food banks provide in such crises.

Torres Small praised the local and national efforts to tackle the immediate needs and emphasized USDA's commitment to swift and effective aid distribution. She pointed out that the agency works closely with partners like Feeding America to ensure food reaches affected areas promptly.

Golden Harvest Food Bank has been at the forefront, coordinating with over 200 food banks and local agencies like United Way and YMCA to maximize recovery efforts.

Amy Breitmann, the bank’s CEO, stressed the increased demand for food and the community's struggle to cope with the hurricane's impact.

The USDA has been instrumental in implementing the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP) to assist nearly a million households in 50 counties.

The program adjustments include replacing SNAP benefits lost during the storm, facilitating access to prepared foods, and enabling local organizations to provide meals to children during school closures.

USDA's proactive measures are crucial for recovery, ensuring that communities receive necessary support during these challenging times. Their continued collaboration with federal and local entities underscores the commitment to rebuild and strengthen the affected regions.
