Final Call - Enroll Now for Big Sioux River Project

Final Call - Enroll Now for Big Sioux River Project

The USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in South Dakota unveils the closing enrollment period for the Big Sioux River Project, a part of the Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP). This initiative primarily covers the Middle and Lower Big Sioux River watersheds located in eastern South Dakota.

Interested parties can submit their applications throughout the year, but to be considered for Fiscal Year 2024, they need to do so by Oct. 27, 2023.

Since its inception in 2013, the project's main aim has been to enhance the quality of impaired streams in the watershed area. The key targets include reducing fecal coliform and total suspended solids. This initiative has successfully protected over 88 miles of rivers and streams, ensuring better water and soil quality while reducing soil erosion.

The Watershed Education Program Manager for the Big Sioux River Project, Amber Lively, highlighted the significant role of the partnership with NRCS in safeguarding water quality. Their combined efforts have significantly reduced nutrients, sediment, and E. coli from entering the watershed.

The RCPP aims to strengthen the coordination between the NRCS and its partners, providing essential conservation assistance to landowners and producers. The NRCS supports these individuals with partnership agreements, program contracts, and easement agreements, all under the rules of the Environmental Quality Incentives Program.

For more information about the technical and financial assistance offered by the NRCS, you can find your nearest USDA Service Center using the service center locator.
