The 79th Annual Watertown Winter Farm Show, a cornerstone event for South Dakota's agricultural sector, is set to honor Merlin Bunde and Lynn E. Johnson for their exceptional contributions. Scheduled from February 7-10 at the Codington County Extension Complex, this event is a highlight for the community, showcasing the best in farming, livestock, and agriculture.
Bunde and Johnson are not new faces at the show; their involvement spans decades, with both playing critical roles in the state Crop Show's success. Their dedication has been instrumental in evolving the show into a larger, more inclusive event, complete with health clinics, educational classes, and improved 4-H lunches.
Their first experiences with the farm show date back to their youth, with Bunde judging grain samples as a high school student and Johnson attending with his father.
Their agricultural journey began after graduating from South Dakota State University, with Bunde starting full-time farming in 1964 and Johnson in 1976. Their expertise and commitment have significantly influenced the state Crop Show's organization, moving it to a day before the farm show for better management and display.
The Watertown Area Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee, responsible for organizing the farm show, annually dedicates the event to individuals or families who have made significant contributions. This year, Bunde and Johnson, along with two families, are the honorees, a testament to their hard work and dedication.
The Watertown Winter Farm Show is a vital platform for education, community, and face-to-face interactions, preserving the relevance of agriculture in a tech-driven world. Bunde and Johnson, as advocates, maintain a link between past traditions and future innovations in farming, fostering a sense of connection.
