Meat Processing Fuels Jobs and Value Across America

Meat Processing Fuels Jobs and Value Across America

By Jamie Martin

A new national economic report shows that the meat and poultry processing industry continues to make a major contribution to the United States economy. In 2025, the processing sector provided $57.3 billion in direct value and supported nearly 584,000 direct jobs. These workers earned $40.6 billion in labor income, showing the importance of the industry for families and communities across the country.

The study also reported $311.0 billion in total sales and $12.5 billion in taxes paid to local, state, and federal governments. These contributions help maintain public services, including schools, road networks, and community programs.

When indirect and induced effects are included, the overall economic impact becomes even larger. The total value increases to $347.7 billion, with more than 3.2 million jobs nationwide. Labor income rises to $205.3 billion, and total sales reach $911.7 billion. Taxes also expand to $77.0 billion. These extended effects come from connected industries such as livestock and poultry production, transportation services, animal feed manufacturing, and equipment production.

The report shows that almost every state benefits from processing activities, but some rely on it more heavily. The highest-impact states include Texas, Nebraska, Iowa, Georgia, North Carolina, Kansas, California, and Arkansas. Leading districts include Nebraska-3, Iowa-4, Texas-13, Kansas-1, Minnesota-1, and Arkansas-3.

Industry leadership explained that processing companies are often the largest employers in rural areas. Besides offering jobs, these companies also make community investments by donating food and supporting housing, schools, childcare, and other essential services. This support strengthens quality of life and promotes long-term rural development.

The research was completed by Decision Innovation Solutions and includes data that can be viewed by state and congressional district. The findings show that the meat and poultry processing industry will remain a key contributor to the national economy and continue supporting rural communities in the future.
