Networking Drives SD Community Growth

Networking Drives SD Community Growth

By Scout Nelson

The Energize conference, held annually in various small towns across South Dakota, is making significant strides in community development and networking. The event, designed for community and business leaders, focuses on revitalizing rural areas through innovative approaches and shared experiences.

The conference was first attended by Amy Lehman and Bobbi Schmidt in 2021, who were profoundly inspired by the knowledge they gained. This transformative experience led them to actively engage in community development projects in the White River. The following year, they continued their journey by participating in Marketing Hometown America, a program dedicated to enhancing community engagement and economic growth.

Hosted by the SDSU Extension Community Vitality Program, Energize is celebrated for its unique format. It incorporates walking conferences in the host community, allowing participants to engage directly with local businesses and leaders during breakout sessions. These sessions cover a range of topics, including community fundraising, arts, and agritourism, providing practical and successful strategies applicable to small towns.

The conference not only offers a platform for sharing successful models but also introduces attendees to various resource partners and networking opportunities. This has proven effective, as evidenced by the significant economic impact and positive feedback from past participants. In 2024, the event brought an estimated $34,000-$40,000 to Hot Springs, highlighting its potential to boost local economies.

The benefits of the conference extend beyond economic gains. Participants report increased opportunities for community investment and relationship building. An impressive 86% of past attendees recommended the conference to others, reflecting its value in fostering community spirit and collaboration.

Energize’s focus on asset-based community development encourages attendees to leverage local strengths to address challenges.

This approach is embodied in the experiences of Lehman and Schmidt, who have successfully mobilized community initiatives in White River, resulting in significant local improvements and vibrant community events.

Overall, Energize serves as a catalyst for sustainable community development, inspiring participants to implement innovative ideas and foster economic growth in their respective locales. Its ongoing success is a testament to the power of collaborative learning and community engagement in driving rural revitalization.
