SDSPA Guides Organic Farm Transitions

SDSPA Guides Organic Farm Transitions

By Scout Nelson

The transition to organic farming can seem daunting, but help is available. The South Dakota Specialty Producers Association (SDSPA) is dedicated to assisting producers and handlers through the process. Dr. Angela Jackson, SDSPA's Organic Ag Transition Advisor, is ready to answer all your queries and provide the necessary guidance.

Producers interested in converting their operations to organic methods can avail themselves of personalized advice during designated office hours.

Dr. Jackson is available for phone consultations on 605-624-1966 or via email. Office hours are set on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12-1 PM and 5-6:30 PM Central Time. She is unavailable on Thursdays but resumes consultations on Saturdays from 8-10 AM.

In addition to remote assistance, SDSPA offers a more hands-on approach with on-site farm visits. These visits are specially tailored for those seeking in-depth technical support on their journey to organic production. Due to high demand, these visits are limited and require an appointment, which can be arranged directly with Dr. Jackson.

This comprehensive support structure is part of SDSPA’s commitment to fostering sustainable agricultural practices and helping local farmers succeed in the organic market. Transitioning to organic farming not only supports environmental health but also opens new market opportunities for producers.

Whether you are just curious about the requirements or are deep into planning your transition strategy, SDSPA’s resources and expert guidance can pave the way for a smoother transition. Embrace the future of agriculture by considering the shift to organic farming and let SDSPA help you make it a reality.
