SDSU Honored Leaders at Ag Week Banquet

Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and supporters were honored during the CAFES Prexy Council Ag Week Banquet held at South Dakota State University. The event highlighted achievements and recognized contributions that support agriculture, education, and industry growth.

“On behalf of Prexy Council, we are grateful for all of the students, alumni, faculty, staff and supporters who made this year’s Ag Week Banquet such a success,” said Gabi Joos, the 2026 CAFES Prexy Council Ag Week chair. “It was incredible to see our community gathered together, celebrating the traditions, connections and future of agriculture.”

The annual event has long recognized students and faculty, but this year also included new awards for alumni and an award for a friend of the college, along with a staff award. The CAFES Prexy Council collected nominations, and committees of students, faculty, and staff evaluated them based on set criteria.

Lisa Roker received the Walt McCarty Advising Award for her strong commitment to students and academic guidance. The Distinguished Alumni Award recognized graduates who show strong professional success. Joel DeRouchey and Lloyd Metzger received this honor for their leadership and contributions to agriculture and food science.

Metzger currently serves as the vice president of quality and technical services at Valley Queen Cheese and continues to be actively involved with the department.

Phil Urso was named Teacher of the Year for his dedication to student success and learning. The Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow group was named Club of the Year for leadership, growth, and community service. Bev Cassady received Club Adviser of the Year for her support and guidance to students.

Outstanding Student Awards were expanded to include all class levels, recognizing students for academic performance and involvement. Seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshmen were all acknowledged.

Kylie Mockler was selected as CAFES Advocate and now works to represent students while encouraging leadership and engagement.
