Farmers, gardeners, and those interested in agriculture have a special opportunity. South Dakota State University Extension is holding a Corn and Melon Disease Workshop. Experts like Kristine Lang, a Horticulture Specialist, and Madalyn Shires, a Plant Pathology Specialist, will guide this event.
It's for all - big or small farm owners and even future farmers. The event is set for Aug. 23, 2023, at the SDSU Southeast Research Farm. Best part? It's free.
The workshop's morning session will talk about 'tar spot,' a disease that affects corn. This fungus started troubling U.S. corn in 2015, reaching South Dakota by 2022. Attendees will learn to spot and treat it.
The afternoon session will dive into melon growing. They'll discuss different ways to grow melons and how to spot diseases. The day ends on a sweet note, discussing how to check the sweetness of fruits and letting participants taste fresh melons.
Remember, no need to register, and the event will happen rain or shine. But keep pets at home. For any queries, reach out to Kristine Lang at SDSU.
