South Dakota State University Extension is gearing up for its third annual South Dakota Virtual Vegetable Short Course. This event is specifically tailored to support small and medium-scale commercial specialty crop producers. The goal is to provide them with the knowledge needed to improve and expand their agricultural practices through practical, science-based information.
The short course is scheduled as a four-part series, conducted online via Zoom on January 21, 23, 28, and 30, 2025, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. CST. While the event is free, registration is mandatory to access the Zoom links. Interested participants can register on the SDSU Extension Events page by searching for "vegetable".
This year's sessions will tackle key topics like soil health, weed management, and the integration of cover crops, with a special focus on adapting farming practices to extreme weather conditions.
Each session will be moderated by Kristine Lang, assistant professor and SDSU Extension Consumer Horticulture Specialist, alongside Rhoda Burrows, professor and SDSU Extension Horticulture Specialist.
Highlighting the educational aspect, two of the sessions will feature current and former SDSU students discussing their research. Notably, Alexis Barnes from the University of Illinois Extension will share insights on crop failures and weather challenges, drawing from her experiences as a former SDSU student now working in Illinois.
Additional speakers include Kyle Haroldson, discussing weed management and soil health, and Shannon Mutschelknaus, who will provide expertise on constructing high tunnels for better crop production.
This virtual series not only aims to educate but also to create an interactive platform where attendees from various backgrounds can engage directly with experts. This setup fosters a dynamic learning environment, allowing for an exchange of ideas and experiences across different agricultural contexts.
SDSU Extension continues to emphasize the importance of this event in bringing fresh perspectives to farming and providing a comprehensive educational experience for all participants interested in specialty crop production.
For further details or to register, participants are encouraged to contact Kristine Lang through the SDSU Extension office.
