South Dakota celebrates century-old family farms and ranches

By Scout Nelson

The South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) and the South Dakota Farm Bureau (SDFB) are thrilled to announce this year's Century Farm and Ranch program. This prestigious program celebrates South Dakota families who have maintained ownership of their farm or ranch for 100, 125, or 150 years.

To be eligible for the Century Farm and Ranch program, families must prove continuous ownership of at least 80 acres of their original farmland for 100 years or more. Those reaching 125 or 150 years can apply for Quasquicentennial or Sesquicentennial status. Applicants must provide documentation proving the original date of purchase.

Interested families can find application forms online at the South Dakota Farm Bureau website or by contacting the SDFB at 605.353.8050. The deadline to apply is August 1, 2024.

The 2024 recognition event for these enduring farms and ranches will take place at the South Dakota State Fair on Thursday, August 29, at 10 a.m. on the Dakotaland Stage. The South Dakota State Fair, a celebration of agricultural heritage, will run from August 28 to September 2 at Huron, showcasing the rich farming and ranching culture of the state.
