South Dakota farmers made some headway in planting crops during the week ending June 2nd, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Progress varied between crops.
Corn planting is nearing completion at 94%, ahead of the five-year average of 85% but slightly behind last year 96%. The condition of corn crops is good, with 74% rated good and 8% excellent.
Soybean planting is lagging both the average 70% and last year 87% at 75%. Emergence is also slow for soybeans, with only 34% sprouted compared to the 42% average.
Winter wheat is in mostly good condition 54% good, 22% excellent, but head emergence is behind schedule at 22% compared to the 29% average. Spring wheat, oats, and sorghum are all in good condition, with planting progress for sorghum near average 68%.
Sunflower planting is behind last year 27% but close to the historical average 28%.
Pasture and range conditions are mostly good, with 62% rated in that category.
This report highlights the mixed progress of South Dakota crops. While corn planting is on track, soybeans and some winter wheat developments are lagging.
