South Dakota State University Extension, along with several local partners, will host the 2025 Local Foods Conference on November 7-8 at the Best Western Ramkota Inn in Aberdeen.
Themed “Growing Forward Together,” this annual event highlights the importance of strong community food systems.
The conference is organized in partnership with Dakota Rural Action, the South Dakota Soil Health Coalition, McCrory Gardens at SDSU, and the South Dakota Local Foods Coalition.
It is open to everyone, with a focus on bringing together farmers, consumers, and food system professionals. Registration is required, with adult tickets set at $150 for both days or $100 for one day, and student tickets at $100 for both days or $60 for one day.
Over the two days, attendees will hear from keynote speakers, join breakout sessions, and connect with others who are passionate about supporting local foods.
Keynote presenters include the director of Indianpreneurship at Nebraska Indian Community College, who also operates a catering business, and a food systems program manager from Iowa State University Extension.
Breakout sessions will cover a wide range of topics, including farm-to-school programs, local food business strategies, and production practices.
Sessions will be led by business owners, farmers, and researchers, offering practical knowledge and tools for both producers and supporters of local food systems.
The event also emphasizes that local foods extend far beyond fruits and vegetables, including meat, dairy, and grains. Organizers encourage community members to attend, learn, and become part of strengthening local food pipelines in South Dakota.
The Local Foods Conference is more than an educational event; it is a chance for people to recharge, share ideas, and build relationships that help ensure healthier, more resilient food systems across the state.
