The South Dakota Soil Health Coalition has scheduled its annual Soil Health School for Aug. 28-30 in Garretson, SD. With a blend of in-room lessons and on-site field exercises, this event promises an enriching experience for the attendees.
This two-and-a-half-day program offers an immersive soil health management course for around 30 participants, focusing on nutrient management, residue control, seeding, pest management, cover crops, livestock integration, soil carbon enhancement, and saline remediation. Expertise from both within and outside the state is provided.
The unique aspect of this school is its practical approach. Participants will be taken to field plots to observe trials. Here, they'll get insights on how to graze livestock using cover crops, minimize soil disruption while manuring, and carry out soil health tests. The structure of the program is such that mornings are earmarked for classroom sessions, while afternoons see participants out in the fields.
The event transitions into an interactive format with discussion panels, allowing participants to ask seasoned soil health producers for insights on best practices, learn from their experiences, and avoid common mistakes. These evening interactions have historically been a hub for enriching dialogues and healthy exchanges between attendees and experienced producers.
