South Dakota Offers Prairie Dog Control Aid

South Dakota Offers Prairie Dog Control Aid

By Scout Nelson

South Dakota landowners who are facing issues with prairie dogs moving onto their property now have an opportunity to get state assistance. Officials from the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) and the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) are working together to manage the spread of these burrowing animals.

The GFP provides assistance to landowners who have prairie dogs crossing from public lands onto private property. Meanwhile, the DANR steps in when the problem is between two private landowners.

To be eligible for help from GFP, the private land must be located within one mile of public land, and there must be at least ten acres of active prairie dog colonies on the land. Those who meet the criteria can apply through the state’s prairie dog control website. The registration deadline is August 15.

Once registered, GFP staff will verify the information during the fall. If all requirements are met, control efforts will begin on the affected land.

Landowners experiencing issues from nearby private land should contact the DANR directly.

The goal of this program is to help manage the spread of prairie dogs, which can damage land and crops. The coordinated effort between the two departments ensures that both public and private land disputes are handled efficiently.

According to the release, “This service is important for maintaining land productivity and preventing further damage caused by prairie dog colonies.”

For help with prairie dogs from public land, landowners can call GFP at (605) 394-6788. For private land concerns, they can contact DANR at (605) 773-3299.

The program is a useful tool for landowners looking to protect their property while working with state agencies to maintain South Dakota’s agricultural lands.
