Soybean uses expand in food and Industry

Soybean uses expand in food and Industry

By Scout Nelson

The United Soybean Board (USB) is dedicated to maximizing profit opportunities for soybean growers by focusing on both food and fuel uses for soybeans. The organization oversees the Soybean Checkoff, driving initiatives that support poultry, livestock, biofuels, and industrial applications.

USB Chairman Steve Reinhard emphasized the soybean’s dual value, with 80% used as meal and 20% as oil. Reinhard noted that animal agriculture consumes 97% of soybean meal, highlighting its significance in supporting poultry, livestock, and aquaculture. “That’s the way that we’re going to add value to the soybean,” Reinhard said.

Expanding industrial uses for soybean oil are also creating new opportunities. During an October webinar hosted by Agri-Pulse Communications, Reinhard highlighted applications in asphalt, footwear, and biofuels. Companies like Skechers and Goodyear Tire are integrating soybean oil into products, aiming to replace petroleum oil by 2040.

Global demand for U.S. soybeans is vital to the industry’s success. 60% of U.S. soybeans are exported, with China as the largest buyer, importing 109 million metric tons in 2024/2025. Initiatives supported by the Soybean Checkoff bolster U.S. soybean sales worldwide, emphasizing differentiation and market access.

“Global demand has been picking up, and global supply is picking up, but hopefully we can balance these together,” said another webinar participant. “China’s soybean imports show how critical they are to the global market.”

Through innovative uses and international outreach, the USB and related initiatives ensure soybean growers benefit from expanding opportunities and global markets, promoting sustainability and profitability.
