In South Dakota, the dedication of specialty crop farmers is pivotal in reshaping how communities' access fresh, local foods. The state is rich in a diverse array of specialty crops like honey, fruits, vegetables, and more, which are increasingly featured not only in farmers markets but also in local restaurants, schools, and retail stores. These efforts bolster local economies and enhance the social and health fabric of the community.
This year, the S.D. Specialty Producers Association, in collaboration with the S.D. Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources, has selected the recipient of the prestigious S.D. Specialty Crop Producer of the Year award. The 2024 honoree is a distinguished farmer from Sherman, S.D., who has been a cornerstone in promoting local produce and community well-being through his farm's operations.
The award acknowledges his long-standing commitment to sustainable farming and community engagement. His farm produces a wide variety of vegetables and maple syrup, which are celebrated for their quality and nutritional value. Beyond agriculture, he is deeply involved in community service, contributing significantly to local food programs and educational initiatives.
He regularly donates part of his harvest to the Sioux Falls Food to You program, which helps ensure that underprivileged families have access to nutritious food. He also supports local education by donating pumpkins to schools each fall and contributes to his local church’s annual events, underlining his role not just as a farmer but as a community pillar.
His approach goes beyond mere farming; he is actively involved in mentoring new and upcoming farmers, thereby fostering a future for sustainable agriculture. His efforts have not only enriched his community's access to healthy foods but have also strengthened communal bonds through various acts of generosity.
The impact of his work and his dedication to both agriculture and his community exemplifies the spirit of the award. His achievements reflect the potential for specialty crop farmers to influence both the local economy and social structure positively. His recognition as the 2024 Specialty Crop Producer of the Year is a testament to his outstanding contribution to South Dakota's agricultural landscape.
