Steady farms - South Dakota's agricultural landscape in 2023

By Scout Nelson

The agricultural landscape in South Dakota remained consistent through 2023, as reported by the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. The state proudly maintained its 28,300 farms and ranches, mirroring the figures from the previous year.

This stability extends across various aspects of the agricultural sector, including both smaller operations with sales under $100,000 and larger operations exceeding this sales figure.

Spanning a vast 42. 3 million acres, the land dedicated to farms and ranches in South Dakota also saw no change from 2022, underlining the sector's steadiness.

The average farm size remained fixed at 1,495 acres, showcasing a year without significant expansion or contraction in agricultural operations.

This consistency is significant for South Dakota's agriculture, indicating a resilient sector amidst various challenges.

The state's farms and ranches, pivotal to both the local and national economy, continue to operate effectively, maintaining their crucial role in feeding the nation and supporting rural communities.
